Somerville Secondary College

Principal’s welcome

WELCOME TO SOMERVILLE SECONDARY COLLEGE

I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and pay my respects to their Elders past, present. and emerging.

Thank you for your interest in Somerville Secondary College, a 7-12 school of the community in the heart of the Mornington Peninsula.

We understand the importance of finding the right school for your child, to enable them to have access to a pathway to success in a culture where students, staff, parents and the community work together to cultivate a supportive and inclusive school community.

At Somerville Secondary College we understand that quality teaching and learning only takes place in an environment based upon the development of positive relationships between teachers and students.

Our school is a friendly, safe and vibrant learning community where students are at the centre of every decision we make and can explore a well-rounded education across a wide range of fields: academic, vocational, sporting, artistic and technological.

We believe in developing confident and capable individuals who can thrive in an ever-changing world no matter what pathway they may choose.

We work extensively to create an inclusive, safe social and physical environment that helps all our students learn and succeed. An environment of challenge and support which allows our students to have an authentic voice in their education and develops their skills to achieve their best.

Our differentiated teaching methods focus on independent learning, building a sense of curiosity and a desire to explore and problem solve.

Alongside our educational pursuits, we take pride in supporting our students to always have high expectations of themselves and have strong values of integrity, respect and responsibility while having an appreciation of the community around them.

We recognise the importance of a quality education that goes above and beyond what is standard. Creating an environment of high expectations and strong outcomes for your child’s development and future is what drives us too. Regardless of ability, personality or background, it is our goal that every student is supported to fulfill their potential.

We nurture, encourage and expect high achievement with students gaining ATARs in the 90’s over the past 2 years, however we are also about recognising that students are individuals with differing abilities, interests and goals.

Our curriculum is demanding yet sufficiently flexible to allow for varying rates of development and learning. Students are encouraged to have a voice and to discover and pursue their passions. A learning support team works closely with classroom teachers, administrators and other support personnel to develop classroom strategies and individual plans for those who excel or require additional support.

Students are exposed to the full learning spectrum from arts and humanities to sport, science and Design Technology, to help them discover their paths in life and flourish.   An extensive list of co-curricular activities, including sport, robotics, camps, drama and outdoor education, ensures that learning does not take place only in the classroom.

New technologies are embraced at Somerville Secondary College, to aid in learning and to teach responsibility in the digital age. Such a well-rounded education is why our school is continually growing in reputation for producing interesting and interested young people who live their lives to the full. Our College has state of the art TAFE standard facilities available to students as part of our Technical Education / Trade Training Centre and is delivering Certificate II training to students at Year 10 and above in the Plumbing, Electrical, Building & Construction, Fitness and Children’s Services areas.

Our graduate students are currently participating in diverse pathways from Biomedicine, to being identified as top apprentices and VET in the state.

I encourage you to come and talk to us about your child’s learning journey.
